Asian Americans are much less likely than other racial groups to seek help for mental health issues due to social stigma, shame, saving face, and medical costs. Asians also tend to express physical complaints rather than psychological distress. However, there is no health without mental health. In fact, there are a variety of effective, accessible, and culturally competent treatments for mental health problems. In this presentation, a review of non-pharmacological evidence-based interventions for common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety will be discussed. Alternative and complementary Interventions that are popular among Asian populations in the community will also be reviewed with an update on the most recent evidence from clinical trials.
