The Northwest Territories stretch 1.35million sq km —or around 80% the size of Alaska… But while Alaska has 740,000 residents…. The entire Northwest Territories only have 45,000! Today we visit Yellowknife, the capital and only city in the Northwest Territories, which, with an average January low of -29.5°C (-21°F), is not only the coldest city in Canada and North America... It's actually the coldest city with a population over 10,000 residents ANYWHERE outside of Siberia! On average there are 220 days per year with below freezing temperatures, 44 days below -30°C, and the record low windchill was -64°C (-83.2°F). Yes, the weather here is often colder here than McMurdo Station, Antarctica! Yellowknife's location at nearly 62.5 degrees North also means it gets less than 5 hours of daylight in the winter.
