This is Shaikh inspecting one of Wayne Pere's rear bump stops from his 2001 Miata after his FCM Elite suspension upgrade. His original shocks had about 100k miles on them but we've seen this kind of wear after 30k miles. This is "A Bad Thing" if you want a safe, comfortable ride and predictable handling. It's not just Miatas than can experience this, but many vehicles will start to ride and handle poorly because the factory bump stops, an integral part of the suspension, degrade, break or totally disintegrate! This isn't unusual as there's a regular service life for most materials, but many factory bump stops are a lower quality MDI material compared to the TODI or NDI types of micro-cellular polyurethane used in FCM bump stops. If you're getting harsh bottoming on your 1999-2005 Miata, or any vehicle that's on factory suspension, you probably have a disintegrated factory stop like this.
