Traction is whether your wheels have the grip needed to transfer your inputs to the ground or not. A traction control system is a hardware and software setup that uses sensors to determine if your wheels have traction or not. And when they detect a problem, they reduce the power to the driven wheel -- in the case of the motorcycle, the rear wheel — and ensure that the torque at the contact patch doesn’t exceed the available traction. The systems can work up to a 100 times a second, allowing power to be restored as soon as the traction levels permit.
