The Rise and Fall of Beckton Gasworks: An Industrial Legacy Beckton Gasworks opened in 1870, on the north bank of the Thames in an area known as East Level. The plant was owned by the Gas Light and Coke Company (also known as the Westminster Gas Light and Coke Company, and the Chartered Gas Light and Coke Company), who had many such plants all over London, and were headquarted in Westminster, just minutes away from the Houses of Parliament. The plant in Beckton was the largest in London at one point, and was noted for being possibly the largest of its kind in the world. However, the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea at the end of the 1960s were to begin the decline in production at Beckton and other plants, with the plant closing in the mid 1970s. The area fell into decline and was neglected, so much so that the old works were sometimes used in filming, most notably, Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, and many scenes from George Orwell's 1984, starring John Hurt. Beckton Gasworks then became a massive slag heap and utilised as a dry ski slope in the 1980s. Today it is an extensive housing estate and shopping centre. Click play to read more!
