They were acclimated for 3 weeks prior to review. 00:51 Cigar Overview The Rocky Patel Short Run is a 6 by 52 Toro also known as the Epic. It is manufactured in Honduras in the accordion method. It features a San Andres Oscuro wrapper and the binder and filler are Honduran. 02:33 Look & Feel The Short Run cigar is a very dark, elegant-looking cigar. It shines under the light, revealing a dripping luscious quantity of oils and it features a chocolate fondant hue. It is quite firm, a little bit too firm on the spring, but it does have a nice straight construction. 03:26 Prelight In terms of aromas, the Rocky Patel Short Run has a gourmand expression of some licorice, some caramelized tonka bean, and some spicy anise. The pre-light draw has excellent airflow though it does give you some resistance. The flavor is quite rich; the anise and the licorice have carried on but are also accompanied by caramel instead of tonka bean. In this case, it's a lot much sweeter and syrupy. 04:07 First Third In the first third, there's beautiful ash and a slight waviness on the burn line which had to be corrected. As for the flavor profile, it's very pleasant though a bit milder in flavor than expected. The licorice seems to have followed all the way through, dominating the first third. It's sweet but there is some bitterness. 05:34 Second Third I'm now in the second third past the halfway point. As you can see, the burn line is a little bit skew. In terms of the flavor profile, it has been a lot more subdued since the first third. The body is starting to bubble away and increase in intensity. However, the changes have been quite slight. 07:16 Last Third Well into the final third, there is a distinctive oak note that pretty much dominates it. You'll also get some hints of pepper and some musky labdanum, otherwise, it remains quite subdued. The body has increased to a medium to full but is not a full punchy cigar. It's not particularly complex as a smoking experience. The mouthfeel, however, remains smooth throughout the whole experience. 10:20 Presentation & Value For Money This Short Run cigar comes with two bands: the main Rocky Patel band and then there is a band that says Short Run. They're not particularly ostentatious. And then in terms of the box, this is actually sold in bundles. It comes in a cellophane bundle with a paper that wraps around the whole lot. On value for money: this cigar is sold exclusively through Holt's. Its RRP is said to be $600 for a bundle of 20 and yet a bundle of 20 can be picked up through online retailers for about $60, which comes to $3 per cigar. At $3 a cigar, that presents excellent value all day. 12:11 Occasion & Pairings This cigar is great for a nightcap with friends as it's so affordable. It's also great for around barbecues. When pairing with food, the Rocky Patel Short Run is something that will go quite well with chocolate-based desserts. As for beverages, continuing with the chocolate theme, hot chocolate or dark chocolate would be a great choice as well. If you're more of a coffee drinker, an americano would be a great choice. For the whiskey drinkers, an Islay Single Malt is recommended. You want something that is heavily peated that has a bold smokiness. This normally is always a bit of a touchy one to have with a cigar since that can easily overpower the cigar and end up masking some of its flavors. But in this case, they would pair quite nicely and marry well in terms of flavor. Additionally, a Laphroaig 10, or even a Laguvalin or an Ardbeg could also work well.
