The comedy of Roar is partly the comedy of ordinary people in bizarre—and potentially deadly—situations. But much of the funniest action is provided by a huge cast of untried and untrained comic geniuses - the animals themselves. When his wife and children arrive (real-life wife Tippi Hedren, The Birds, and step-daughter Melanie Griffith, Working Girl) for a visit, a long-brewing battle for dominance between the lions erupts and threatens their very lives. Director’s Bio: Noel Marshall, the producer of The Exorcist, came to Los Angeles to open his own talent representation company. By 1969 he had begun packaging and producing his own films. That year, he was in Mozambique when he discovered a pride of lions that had taken over an abandoned bungalow. He found the lions’ behavior so funny that he knew he had a picture. On his return to California, he began interviewing lions, many of whom stayed in his home and it was his interactions with them that formed the basis of the script. Marshall happily admits that the project was an obsession, with his even departing from The Exorcist for the purpose of generating enough money to finish Roar.
