IRAN 🇮🇷 The tomb of Saadi (Aramgah-e-saadi) in Shiraz, Iran 2024 (آرامگاه سعدی)

📍Considered one of the most famous Persian poets, Sa’di is as ubiquitous in Iran as tea and saffron. As his major works include the Golestan (Rose Garden) and Bustan (Garden of Trees), it’s no surprise that his tomb is surrounded by immaculately kept trees and well manicured gardens. The mausoleum itself is located directly ahead of the entry gate with a colonnade set to the left. There are verses of his poems on the interior and a small underground qanat with fish set off to the left. The whole place exudes tranquility, obviously reflected in the behavior of the visitors during my half hour on site. 📍In summary, this was a memorable visit if anything because it confirmed to me the preeminence of poets in Iranian history. The grounds could be appreciated on a simple aesthetic level regardless of who was buried here but the addition of one of the most famous Persian sons makes this an important if not essential visit. It’s probably inevitable but unfair to compare this to Hafez’s shrine and it does falter a bit in comparison but not due to any major deficiencies. The two dovetail nicely together and can be seen in a single day.
