I love All Varieties of Hydrangeas. Some need more winter protection than others. I live in a Zone 6b, so I need to give my Hydrangeas that Bloom on Old wood (They form buds on the Previous seasons Growth) some extra protection, especially when they are young plants. The Mophead (Big Leaf) and Oakleaf Hydrangeas are the two varieties I have in my yard that bloom on old wood. The rest of my hydrangeas are Paniculutas and I don't have to worry about frost damage because they form there buds in there current season growth, after the threat of frost has passed (unless we get some crazy out of the ordinary wildly cold summer haha). Straw and leaves are great insulators and its so easy to protect young plants. Be patient in spring.. and remove the protection once the ground starts warming up and temperatures are 32 degrees Fahrenheit and up. I can't wait to get the most blooms out of my hydrangeas.
