I know we never get a lot of views on our “Sniper” related videos. The film crew wants us to do more “exciting” videos to draw more views. Yeah, I know they are right, but when we were first talking about putting this channel together, we all agreed that we were not going for the “Jackassery” but, rather, we wanted a channel with good shooting tips from professional Subject Matter Experts. So, while talking about a gun level may be boring, having a level gun is extremely important for long range shooting. I once heard a sniper instructor say “just make sure it is close.” Then, I’ve also heard other instructors lose their minds if they see an “off bubble” on the firing line. How much does it really matter? Can you measure it? Yes. Can you compensate for it? Yes, but why? Just make sure your gun is level and you are taking one more variable out of your ballistic solution. Here’s an easy way to get a mental picture for it… Get a yard stick and lean it against the wall. Now, picture the wall is the air and the Yardstick is the flight path of your bullet. You you shoot at that 400 meter target, your bullet rises up the stick (to max ord), then drops back down into the target. Now cant the stick a couple of degrees on the wall. Same shot, the bullet rises up the stick, but physics won't allow it to come back down the stick. It will drop on a separate path back to the base of the wall. If your max ord was 24 inches; measure that far up the stick, mark the wall, then match the same opposite angle with the stick. You can then measure the distance on the floor that your angle made. That’s roughly how much your botched level will more your point of impact. Now that may seem like a small distance, but think of this: At 1200 meters, your .338 Lap Mag is dropping 400 inches. You are gonna need a longer stick. Yes, I said “roughly” as there are other laws of physics playing here than just a simple angle on a wall, but you get the picture. Again, I don’t care which brand of level you chose. Most are really good. Some are great. Todd Hodnett has a great version out. I just didn’t have one present for the video. Whichever you buy, take the time and ensure it is mounted properly, then get in the habit of ensuring your gun is level. Accuracy is all about Consistency.
