3D Plank II A legend lives on – the “Little Plank” in 3D printing In the fall of 2023, while searching for a new project, I came across the “Little Plank” by Chuck Clemans and Dave Jones from 1971. This model was very popular at the time because of its excellent flight characteristics. In May 1972, the original construction plan and a report on the Little Plank III were published in RC Modeler magazine. The model impressed with its simple design. A rectangular wing with a large aspect ratio gave this model its name – “the little board.” The model was designed as a flying wing with a fin but without a tailplane. It was controlled by two ailerons, which also served as elevators. The model initially had no motor – it was only later that a small electric front motor was added to the “Little Plank III”. I decided to completely redesign a model suitable for 3D printing based on the “Little Plank III.” The dimensions of the model were to be as close as possible to the original. The wing profile used at the time – the CJ25²09 – was one of the reasons for the excellent flight characteristics of the “Little Plank.” After extensive research, I decided on the more modern EMX-07 wing profile, which promised particularly balanced flight characteristics across a wide speed range. The “3D Plank” was designed during the winter months of 2023/2024. I was able to rely on the active support of a very successful model designer for flying wing models. Michael (wersy) had been designing and building flying wing models for 3D printing for years and publishing them on Thingiverse. I tested the finished and printed “3D-Plank” extensively in many flights and can now well understand the enthusiasm of model pilots 50 years ago for the “little Plank.” After a few modifications to make reprinting even easier, I am publishing the print files for the “3D Plank II” in the hope that other model pilots will also have a big smile on their faces when their printed “3D Plank II” is in the air.
