Even though the strengthening of existing structures with RC infills within existing frames has been applied and accepted by engineers, further investigation is required regarding their design and construction. There are still a lot of limitations regarding their application, since there are no design guidelines for this retrofitting method and their design and construction is in most cases empirical. Moreover, the tests have been limited to small-scale specimens or to sub-frames, without the rest of the building. The results of a full-scale pseudo-dynamic test of a four-storey three-bay structure that was tested in Ispra for the SERFIN project were used to calibrate numerical models, in order to perform numerical experiments and parametric studies and draw general conclusions about this retrofitting method. In this webinar, a DIANA FEA model that represents the behaviour of the RC frame infilled with RC walls during an earthquake will be presented, along with the material models that were applied to determine the nonlinear behaviour of concrete and reinforcement under earthquake loading. Furthermore, the modelling of the shear connectors (dowels) between the existing bounding frame and the new wall will be illustrated. Finally, the nonlinear 2D finite element model results will be compared with global and local results of the experiment in order to check the capacity of the numerical model to capture the behaviour of the retrofitted building.
