No membrane, no problem: Condensing bacterial organelles Speaker: Stephanie Weber, Department of Biology, McGill University, Canada Chair: Maria Flocco, AstraZeneca, UK Co-Chair: David Rueda, Imperial College London Steph’s work investigates the presence of phase separated organelles in bacteria, focusing on the location of RNA polymerase during the growth cycle. She overcame the challenges of molecule tracking in relatively small cells by taking advantage of fluorescence photoconversion to limit the observation to single molecules. Consequently, she was able to map the dynamics of the RNA polymerase binding to DNA and in and out of phase-separated droplets in vivo. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
