Scherzo in C minor (1845) Artist: Nancy Fierro, piano Composer: Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) Clara Wieck Schumann, a dark haired, blue-eyed, independent child was a born genius whose talent was early recognized and promoted by her ambitious father. Friedrich Wieck trained his daughter to be a concert pianist and a consummate musician. She fulfilled his expectations and became one of the great pianists of the 19th century and a composer of competence and authority, Clara composed numerous piano works, lieder and chamber works--most published during her lifetime. Her stormy C minor Scherzo, composed in 1845, is awash with a flood of notes—fast-paced arpeggios and rapid scale-like runs that reveal Clara’s own robust piano technique. The wintry agitated mood and thematic material of the Scherzo is based on her Op.12 No 5 Lied: “Er ist gekommen in Sturm and Regan” Poetry by Friedrich Rückhart. In the Scherzo as in her song, the rising broken chords recurring throughout the piece depict the lover’s daring approach in turbulent weather. (“He came in storm and rain, my anxious heart beat against his” ) The calmer mid-section Trio with its hymn-like chords reveal a sense of assurance in the lover’s proven faithfulness. “Now in the blessing of spring…He remains mine on any road.” The closing music ends as it began, with turbulence and passion.
