JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA Complete montage of opens, bumps, topicals, rejoins, and a morning update from Gray Media Group's ABC affiliate in Toledo, Ohio. All except the 11pm open were recorded on Monday, December 26, 2022, while the 11pm open came from Tuesday, December 27. This is a very weird Gray station in the fact that they don't really feel like a Gray station (even though the set is a cookie cutter Gray set, and the graphics are a Gray-designed package). They still feel like they're running off of the fumes of when they were a network O&O despite it being 12 years now that they were one. They were pretty good about updating all of their logos and graphics to feature the new ABC logo pretty early on, which most affiliates didn't do or still haven't done. They also sort of have some remnants of their Lilly Broadcasting -ownership lying around too (the use of "This Is Home" for music – which the station has attributed former news director Brian Traruing to "creating" even though he didn't). This product is decent for what it is, and one of the better Gray stations. Definitely better than all of their competition which is basically WTOL since WNWO puts forth no effort. They still surprisingly have kept a lot of veteran talent which is odd for both the market size and the ownership group, including longtime anchor team Diane Larson and Lee Conklin. Most of their anchors were hired when they were an O&O. That might be why I like them. They also have a couple of veteran reporters as well but none are seen here since presumably they were off due to the holidays. They didn't really have MMJs until a couple of years ago and now like other Gray stations hire out of school. Weekends seem to be the revolving door now ever since longtime weekend anchor Bill Hormann left the business a couple of years ago. They seem to be decently staffed as well despite issues other stations are having. They also recently picked up the "First Alert Weather" moniker, which is actually a return to it for them as they used to use it in the 1990s. The graphics are an unknown Gray package, music is a mix of "This Is Home" and "Eyewitness News" both from Gari Music, and John Pleisse is the voiceover artist. They seem to be using "This Is Home" exclusively in the opens now at least. For a while they were mixing it up and using "Eyewitness News" in the evenings (the specific cut they were using still survives in the 11pm topical and in the 11pm bump before lottery drawings) and "This Is Home" in the mornings and in their image campaign. Anchors include James Starks, meteorologist Dan Smith, Christina "Tina" Williams (she uses both on-air), Eric Haubert, Lee Conklin, meteorologist Derek Witt, and chief meteorologist Jay Berschback. 0:00 - WTVG legal ID 0:05 - 13ABC Action News 4.30am open (somewhat different cut than the later opens) 2:08 - 13ABC Action News 6am open 2:59 - 13ABC Action News morning update (7.23am) 5:03 - "The Nine" open 6:31 - 13ABC Action News at Noon live topical 6:59 - 13ABC Action News at Noon tease/open 8:03 - 13ABC Action News at Noon bottom-of-hour open 9:02 - 13ABC Action News at 4 tease/open 10:18 - 13ABC Action News at 4 bottom-of-hour open 10:55 - 13ABC Action News at 5 First Forecast/tease/open 12:50 - 13ABC Action News at 5 rejoin 13:22 - 13ABC Action News at 5.30 open 14:18 - 13ABC Action News at 11 topical 14:44 - 13ABC Action News at 11 lottery drawing/First Forecast/tease/open The 6pm open will be uploaded separately in a full newscast posting later. ©2022 Gray Television and WTVG-TV, no copyright infringement intended.
