Dr. Michael Walsh, pediatric cardiologist, explains how diagnosing heart defects in a fetus early on in the pregnancy, can result in better outcomes for the baby and the mom. More information about pediatric cardiology: http://www.brennerchildrens.org/Pedia... TRANSCRIPT: The reason that it's so important for us to try to diagnose these heart defects before the babies are born is because we find that whenever diagnose these babies in utero, it typically means they're going to have better outcomes after the babies are born. Part of the reason for that is it allows us as the cardiologists to prepare for the baby's arrival and have a treatment plan already in place before the baby arrives. Additionally, for the parents' sake, knowing about these heart defects before the babies' come gives them a chance to, if necessary, meet with the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeons that may be working on the baby, also to take a tour of our state-of-the-art PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) where the baby may be spending time after he or she is born. We value the input of our families very much and definitely want to make sure that they have all of the information that they need before the baby comes so they can prepare- both practically and also mentally for the arrival of the baby. At Brenner Children's Hospital, we deliver care that exceeds the standard of excellence.
