When I’m out on a ride you will have heard me saying all the time “Look at that view!” But while I’m riding, What am I looking at? Observing is central to riding safely. But what is observation? In this video I give you my take on this. We don’t observe with just our eyes, we use all senses, 1. Vision - scanning forward, to each side and in the mirrors 2. Hearing – traffic and background sounds, car horns, emergency sirens. 3. Smell – cut grass, farm smells, fuel 4. Thermosensation — the ability to detect temperature — triggers our reflex to withdraw from painful heat or cold. But mammals are also able to detect more pleasant cool and warm temperatures. We sense temperature in our environment through specialized nerve cells that project into the outer layers of the skin. Zones of Vision We need to think about what we can see and can’t see. Your road position and other vehicles can restrict what you can see. This is called your Zone of Vision - The uninterrupted picture you can see with regard to objects blocking your view. You must compensate for the blind spot by anticipating what could be there, and / or move your position to open the view. We are given lots of information to make the task of observation easier for us. Road signs, information boards, white lines both along the road and across at junction. Adding these to natural features like hedges, walls and lamp posts makes it easier for us. Here are just some of the things that can assist us: Road signs Warnings – Triangle signs with a red border Orders – Circular with red border means you must not. Circular with blue background means you must, e.g., circular blue sign with a white 30 you must do at least 30mph Information – rectangular. Road markings Along the road Centre lines – equal length line to gap, donates centre of a single carriageway road Hazard lines – longer line and shorter gap, warning of a hazard Lane markings – short lines and long gaps, separation lines on multi lane roads. Solid white line – no crossing, unless for exemptions in Highway Code Broken White Line – you can cross if clear to do so Across the lane Solid single line – stop line. You must STOP FOOT DOWN. Double Broken line – Give Way to traffic on the main road. Single broken line – turning in lane from main to side road Visual clues Single lamp post – usually a junction OPPOSITE to the light. Cluster of lamps – major hazard, roundabout, junction, traffic lights Line of lamp posts – direction of road Bus stop – possible stationary traffic, pedestrians, fuel spills on road Chevron boards – tight bend Road signs – triangle warnings, round orders. Skid marks on road – hidden hazard? So, there you have it. Just a snapshot of what I’m taking in to let me plan the ride, it’s not all just “look at that view!” There is much more to observation that I have gone into here. If you want me to delve deeper, let me know in the comments and I can do a follow up video.
