In this video I demonstrate some of the kinds of instrumentation and signal processing that we use and do for the purpose of enhanced interpretation of vibration signals from rotating machines. I demonstrate the measurement of a taco pulse train from a household fan with a retro-reflective tape strip to give a once-per-rev pulse which can remeasured by an oscilloscope and, using an FFT, the fundamental rotation frequency and higher order internet harmonics (as we expect from such a periodic square wave signal) can be readily seen, coinciding with the time between pulses. I also show the use of a stroboscope to "freeze" the motion of the fan blades by synchronising the flashing light source with the rotation speed of the fan at 1260 rpm. Using these tools and techniques, as we do in other parts of our Dynamic Systems and Control stream of subjects, delivered by Centre for Audio, Acoustic and Vibration colleagues, including myself, within the School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at UTS, we can gain greater insights into the vibration performance. These approaches are directly utilised in industry for the determination of the condition of critical machinery, keeping the wheels turning in the world.
