In recent years, there have been a number of prominent cases in the US in which white police officers have shot and killed young black men. On Friday, a Chicago jury convicted a white police officer of second-degree murder in the 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald, a 17-year-old African American. The shooting was captured on police video and discrepancies between the officer's account and the footage sparked outrage throughout the city. Protesters gathered outside the court as the verdict was read. Video posted on social media showed activists and others cheering and chanting: "We finally got justice!"
