“Strange Music” is a song from the 1944 operetta “Song of Norway.” Adapted from the music of Edvard Grieg, the operetta was written by Robert Wright and George Forrest. Originally presented at the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera in 1944, the show later opened on Broadway in the same year followed by a 1945 run at London’s West End. It was the first Broadway show to open across the Atlantic after WWII. A film adaptation was released in 1970. The song “Strange Music” was based on Grieg’s 1896 piano composition “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen.” For reference, the lyrics are printed below. In this rendition, pianist Charles Manning improvises the song “Strange Music.” ~ Lyrics ~ Strange music in my ears, Only now as you spoke did it start, Strange music of the sphere, Could its lovely hum be coming from my heart? You appear and I hear song sublime, Song that I'm incapable of, So dear, let me hold you near, While we treasure every measure, So that time can never change The strange new music of love.
