How do you prepare for a role in an opera? Study, live healthily, get plenty of rest and plan ahead! Maartje Rammeloo plays Polly Peachum in Die Dreigroschenoper and shows us what her life is like during rehearsals. Die Dreigroschenoper is a play with music in a prologue and eight scenes based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, by Bertolt Brecht (text) and Kurt Weill (music) in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann. Die Dreigroschenoper is stimulating entertainment that challenges the audience to take a critical look at society and morality. Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht wrote this satirical musical theatre piece, which is full of social criticism, in 1928. Almost a hundred years later, the work is still as sharp and relevant as ever. Die Dreigroschenoper is about the devious gangster Macheath, played by actor/singer Maarten Heijmans, who marries the daughter of the beggar king, Polly Peachum (Maartje Rammeloo). Father Peachum (Huub Claessens) tries to have Macheath sentenced to death in order to retain his power. Betrayal, corruption and bribery reveal how this (under)world works. The opera begins with the world-famous Die Moritat von Mackie Messer and ends with a cynical deus ex machina, or unexpected dénouement. On stage from 14 November to 14 December 2025.
