What is causing my acid reflux (Heartburn)???? Acid Reflux (GERD), commonly called heartburn, that irritating burning pain in your chest or throat can be very uncomfortable throughout the day and can make sleeping very difficult How can a pelvic floor physical therapist help with this condition???? The respiratory diaphragm, the muscle for breathing that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity can be the culprit!!! When we eat or drink food passes from our mouth all the way down the esophagus, through the diaphragm and then into the stomach. Restrictions (tightness) in the diaphragm can cause acid reflux by putting too much pressure on and squeezing the esophagus. Weakness of the diaphragm can effect a one way valve designed to prevent GERD that connects the esophagus to the stomach and allow acid to rise back up into the esophagus causing reflux. Releasing a tight diaphragm can help release pressure on the esophagus and mitigate symptoms of acid reflux. Strengthening a weak diaphragm can improve functioning of this one-way valve. As a pelvic floor therapist we always look at the diaphragm as it is an Integral part of the deep core system. REMEMBER.... the deep core is made of 4 muscles, the pelvic floor , the transverse abdominus, diaphragm and multifidi. As I release clients diaphragms to help restore balance in the body..... people often report that they have tremendous improvement or complete resolution of the acid reflux symptoms. You all know that I believe breathing is magical. Here’s another example… Step 1: Deep diaphragmatic breathing may help with symptoms of heartburn by helping the rib cage expand, stretch, release, and relax the diaphragm. This can also open up the space ( hiatus) that the esophagus goes through the diaphragm and take pressure off the esophagus to relieve symptoms of heartburn. Deep diaphragmatic breathing may also help relaxing the abdominal muscles for those who hold persistently hold tension in this muscle group. Step 2: We can progress this deep breathing exercise exercise by placing a small ball (or our hands) over our diaphragm and breathing into this area giving the inhalation a bit of resistance. This resistance will help to further strengthen the diaphragm and improve the efficiency that one-way valve to prevent acid from rising back from the stomach and back into the esophagus. Step 3: From here we can either use her hands or a Thera band to provide resistance around our rib cage , think about breathing out and expanding the Thera band as we inhale and shortening the theraband as we exhale. Try performing these exercises before and after eating to help prevent heartburn. Begin with about 10 repetitions of each working you way up to 20-30 In this video, we progressed by adding two more great exercises to relieve symptoms of reflux naturally.
