The Project C tunnels in Gibraltar are most definitely off the beaten track for most tourists to Gibraltar. Completed in 1945, this extensive tunnel complex was excavated for RAF to facilitate the storage of hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel. With above-ground storage at a premium, but also vulnerable to attack from saboteurs, aircraft and ships, the decision was taken to bury a fuel reserve deep in the rock of Gibraltar. The strategic importance of Gibraltar was proven during the Second World War and British forces needed to keep it this way. The fuel tanks of Project C could keep an airforce in the sky and keep ships in the sea no matter what the situation. In this video I take a walk through the open tunnels, starting off at one of the huge air intakes carved out of the rock face, and follow the tanks and pipes to the control room and out the main entrance. You won't believe the scale of this facility and the state of preservation of this cold war facility.
