I’ve been testing vane choices Vanetec V-Max 2.5" and 3", plus the AAE EP-26 2-7/8" and they had all grouped pretty well out to 50 yards, but then it was pretty terrible. I happened to have a few 125 grain field tips and shot out to 70 yards and immediately went from 8" group to 3" (wide), then 80 yards was about 4-5". Elevation was varied because of the different vane configurations Jaw dropped at the difference, so had to do some work. Arrows are a 300 spine Easton 6mm Axis UA cut at 28.5” with 50 grain brass inserts, shooting out of my Halon X at 29” and 70 pounds. Had the same setup with the 5mm Axis and my Chill R without this issue, but for the Halon X the arrows were too stiff in that configuration. I didn’t want any extra arrow weight, so I ended up needing to increase draw weight to match the arrow stiffness. I figured 73 pounds would be good, so added twists to the cables (limb bolts were already bottomed out), and also one to my string just to keep my draw length where I liked it, rechecked timing and bada bing, bada boom this is what my blind ass can do at 70 yards with a little work on my setup, save for that one terrible shot. This group was my second one at 70 yards and last one for the day, and damn that other arrow! The end before, the EP26 were also way improved after the poundage increase. I was still setting up my new tape and I’m still not sure what broadhead I’m shooting, so not sure which vane setup. Sighting in and taking note for each vane, the V-max 2.5” are so my favorites so far, but we’ll see how they do with broadheads. The 3” V-Max and EP-26 were pretty much equal in testing, with the EP-26 being my preference between those two. Sorry if I don’t make sense, sun was going down quick and I was being eaten up by the mosquitoes. Don’t know why it stopped recording, but you get the picture! Go try it and search for John Dudley HIL Method if you haven’t already. This just shows that the sometimes it isn’t you necessarily, but can be the equipment. This whole bow-arrow matching and cam timing have been the most eye-opening parts of longer distance (50 yards).
