At the turn of the twentieth century, Frances Hodgson Burnett—author of THE SECRET GARDEN, LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY, A LITTLE PRINCESS and other widely read novels—was arguably the most world's most popular and prolific author. Her best loved novels continue to be reissued and inspire film adaptations. Yet the fact that her career began in Knoxville, Tennessee, remains largely ignored. In this presentation, Paul F. Brown explores Burnett's years in Knoxville and identifies the locations of her local homesites. "Frances Hodgson Burnett: The Geography of Her Knoxville Legacy" was originally presented at Maple Hall in Knoxville, Tennessee, during "An Evening with Frances Hodgson Burnett," hosted by the Knoxville History Project on June 21, 2018, to commemorate 150 years since the publication of Burnett's first stories, ones she wrote in Knoxville. Paul F. Brown is a freelance writer and researcher, and the author of RUFUS: JAMES AGEE IN TENNESSEE. He has lectured on Burnett and Agee at various forums, and is a consultant for a forthcoming Agee documentary. Brown's two-part essay on Burnett, "'The Dryad Days': Frances Hodgson Burnett in East Tennessee," was published in the Journal of East Tennessee History and can be found on his website: https://www.paulfbrown.com/portfolio
