If that's your situation, this is the video for you! Otherwise, if you have a proper humidor, but find yourself needing emergency storage, this video may still help you. First off: cigars should ideally be stored at a relative humidity in the mid-60s. 65-65 (65% RH, 65 degrees Fahrenheit) is generally a good environment to store cigars, though others recommend 70-70. Our objective is to get the cigars in as airtight a container as possible. Here are our tips on keeping cigars fresh in a pinch. We don't recommend the following methods for long-term storage of cigars. Therefore, if that's what you need, check out our cigar storage playlist, linked above. Now, if your cigar is still in the cellophane and you don't have a humidor, leave it in the cellophane. Keep it in a cool, dry space away from sunlight. Of course, the cellophane isn't totally airtight, so this will only work for a short period. Next, you can put the cigar in a ziploc bag, remove as much air as possible, and close the bag. This will further extend the cigar's life, but since ziploc bags aren't totally airtight, it's not a perfect solution. Just how long this preserves the cigar depends on the ambient conditions. For example, in the milder months, you may get a few weeks or even months of storage. In the winter, when it's drier, this may only be good for a few days. Though they work in a pinch, they're not designed like the humidor bags from Boveda we show in other videos. Those have better closure mechanisms, with barrier-laminated walls that permit far less air exchange than ziplocs. Another option is plastic wrap. Wrap it around the cigar, and place in a cool, dry spot. You can also use this in conjunction with a glass container. Simply find a drinking glass tall enough for your cigars, add the cigars, and apply the wrap over top. Tupperware-type containers also work. For the best seal, find one with a rubber gasket and clamp-down sides. Regardless of method, your cigars will dry out gradually when stored. Cigars stored with too much moisture will go mouldy, though. If you're using a tupperware container, you can place a paper tower moistened with distilled water into a ziploc bag, leave the bag slightly open, and add it to the container. This will allow a little bit of humid air to filter out into the container. If you can't find distilled water, mineral water is the next best bet; avoid tap water. However, if you have an airtight tupperware container, you can make a basic tupperdor by adding a Boveda pack. These are only $4-$5 USD on Amazon, and when paired with a good container make for excellent cigar storage. If you've watched our other videos, we may seem to push Boveda a lot. Really, though, we've tried all of the humidification methods, and we've found Boveda to be the easiest, most reliable solution, and it's affordable.
