PNW People, Places & Pleasure, Episode 2

Auburn's history began with the indigenous ancestors of the Muckleshoot Tribe, the first inhabitants of the Green River Valley. Following the Puget Sound War and the establishment of the Muckleshoot Reservation in 1857, the town of Slaughter was incorporated by settlers in 1891. The community soon changed the name to Auburn, inspired by Oliver Goldsmith's poetry and reflecting its status as a hop-growing region. After an aphid plague ruined the hop industry, Auburn shifted to dairy and berry farming, dealing with constant flooding until the construction of major dams. Post-WWII, the arrival of industrialization, notably a large Boeing facility, cemented Auburn's status as a regional industrial center. Through strategic annexations, the city continued to expand, incorporating areas like Lakeland Hills and Lea Hill. The Muckleshoot Tribe remains a vital and significant part of Auburn. A major employer and economic engine in South King County, the tribe uses ventures like the Muckleshoot Casino Resort to fund essential services for its members and contribute philanthropically to the wider region. As co-managers of local natural resources, the tribe is also dedicated to environmental stewardship and preserving their cultural heritage. Demographically, Auburn is a diverse and growing city. The population has increased significantly over the decades, reaching over 87,000 in 2020. The city's income profile is middle-income compared to Washington, but lower than many King County neighbors. While facing some income inequality, educational attainment is moderate, with a majority completing high school and a notable percentage holding bachelor's degrees. Auburn's economy is defined by its industrial core. Strategically located with access to major transport routes, it is the center of the largest industrial complex in the Northwest, driving a significant portion of the region's economy through sectors like logistics, manufacturing, and retail. The city was recognized as an Innovation Partnership Zone for its economic development potential. The Auburn School District serves a diverse student body and performs at an above-average level, particularly noted for its diversity and athletic programs. While test scores are mixed, the district remains a solid educational institution. Green River College further contributes to the city's educational landscape. Auburn is known for several prominent features: the Emerald Downs racetrack, the Muckleshoot Casino Resort, its industrial power, the natural beauty of the Green River Valley, and annual community events like the 4th of July Festival and KidsDay. Its entertainment and cultural scene includes the Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen City Ballet, and the White River Valley Museum, which showcases local history. #explore #auburnwa #washingtonstate #Kingcounty #city #biography #nativeamerican #history #culture ‪@fox13seattle‬ ‪@KING5Seattle‬ ‪@kiro7‬ ‪@komonews‬
