Wildlife crime is often treated as an ecological problem — but at its core, it’s also a crime problem. What if the same analytical tools used in policing could help us better understand, predict, and prevent wildlife crime? In this episode, I speak with Emma Richards, a wildlife crime analyst and researcher working at the intersection of conservation and crime science. We explore how ideas like hotspot policing, risk terrain modelling, and situational crime prevention can be applied to conservation — helping rangers and analysts target the right places at the right time. Emma also discusses the challenge of turning theory into practical tools for protected areas, the importance of meaningful data over simple metrics, and how training and analytical workflows can empower conservation teams to make more informed decisions. This conversation dives into the growing field of conservation crime science, and how combining behavioural insights, data analysis, and practical field experience could help improve how we protect wildlife around the world.
