Demolition begins at UTV s former headquarters in Belfast

Demolition work has begun on the former UTV headquarters in South Belfast. Havelock House on the Ormeau Road was the home of the broadcaster from 1959 until 2018, when UTV then moved to City Quays. As well as a television centre, the 150 year old building has been a linen warehouse, troop accommodation and a goods showroom among other things. As a television centre, Havelock House was one of the most important cultural sites in Northern Ireland during the late 20th century as the first small television centre built in the UK and Ireland. In November, it was announced that Lotus Property had acquired the site and would be creating 100 high quality social homes in association with Clanmil Housing Association. The scheme will deliver homes for families, older people, and those with mobility needs, and will comprise of a range of one, two, and three bedroom houses and apartments. However, campaigners from group Save Havelock House raised concerns as it came to light that the demolition work would begin on January 8 - ten days before a scheduled public consultation on plans for the site was due to begin on January 18. A spokesperson for Lotus Property said: "The demolition of Havelock House does not form the basis of the 12-week statutory consultation process due to start in January, which is instead designed to consult on our future plans for the site, creating 100 much needed homes for the city centre. "Havelock House’s condition upon acquisition was such that it could not be repaired or repositioned and the only option to realise our future plans for the site was to demolish it. There was nothing of any historic significance within the building as the building was fully stripped out by the time we acquired it. "Over the last number of months, we have met with local elected representatives and advised them of our plans, both to demolish the building and start the process of community consultation on our exciting plans to create a fully social housing scheme for the city centre."
