Naykhi Baja (lit. Nay referring Newar butcher caste, Khi means drums and Baja as any kind of instrument or ensemble), the instrument which lends its name to the musician caste that plays it, is a two-headed drum of varying shape (barrel to cylindrical), played with a stick and a flat left hand, and are accompanied by the pair of cymbal which are called kay by the Nay and also known as Sichyah among other Newars. Update 6/24/2020: To the viewers who have problems with the title of this video. I am sorry that the English translation of the Newari term ‘Nay’ used in Wegner’s publication (1988) offends your feelings. Please do take care to look up the translation given by Kölver and Shresthacharya in ‘A Dictionary of Contemporary Newari’ (1994). It says ‘caste name of butchers’. When Wegner learnt the Bhaktapur naykhibaja repertoire in 1984/85 and conducted a survey of the local Nay in 1983, their daily occupation had been for centuries cutting animals and selling their meat. So the English term ‘butcher’ was correct. In English-speaking countries, ‘butcher’ is a respected profession like any other. I am aware of the fact that nowadays many Nay caste members follow other professions and do not like to be reminded of their earlier role and status in traditional Newar society. The blame goes to members of the so-called higher castes who like to look down on others. Let us hope that their dividing attitude will be overcome. None of this can limit the quality of those drumming compositions. In addition there are other musical traditions in Nepal where the instrument lends its name from the caste that plays it, for example the instruments Damaha and Madal. Last but not the least, I highly recommend you all to study Prof. Dr. Gert-Matthias Wegner's book "Naykhi Baja of Bhaktapur", 1988. Like, Share and Subscribe for future updates.
