God Smiles (With Latin/English Lyrics) - Anno 2070 Music by Tilman Sillescu

"God Smiles" is the main theme of Anno 2070 that plays on the title screen of the game. Although, the version that plays in-game doesn't have any vocals in it. The Latin and English versions in this video are special versions of this theme that only show up in the official soundtrack. I've never played any of the Anno games, since RTS games aren't really my cup of tea. But I do really love the soundtracks. It's surprisingly beautiful stuff that's being composed for these games, and I'm just glad to have found it. The Latin version of "God Smiles" (which is erroneously called "Italian" on the official soundtrack) has lyrics that reference Carmina Burana (Songs from Benediktbeuern), which is a Latin manuscript filled with medieval poems. For this song, the lyrics reference the "Spring" poem which is about Flora, who is the Roman goddess of flowers and spring. The title of the song, "God Smiles", is referring to the Roman god, Phoebus, who smiles as he lays in Flora's lap. Although, while I was able to find an English translation of that "Spring" poem, the song makes some changes to the lyrics - mainly the last line, "Hoc vario flore coronatus", which was most likely changed so it could fit the structure of the song. So for that line, I did have to do some guesswork as to what Latin words were being sung, and how it translates into English. In other words, I had to do it myself, so you should take that part with a grain of salt. The English version of "God Smiles" has completely unique lyrics, not related to the Latin version. The lyrics seem to be written from the perspective of a god, looking down on humanity and smiling. There also seem to be some religious references in the lyrics, like humans being "made of clay." While the lyrics in the English version are really interesting to think about, I do find the Latin version to be a bit more pleasant to listen to.
