As our ancestors did since the old days, I offer sacrifices to the trees before I cut down a tree to make a Jangseung totem pole. By doing this it is believed that another new life is created in the tree. The trees are ready to give themselves away... The trees in their original don't have any expressions nor warmth... The artisan who carves his soul into trees with careful hands: Artisans of Korean traditional totem poles "Jangseung" - Lee Ga-Rak. A photo of a Jangseung seen as a child left a great impression on the heart of artisan Lee Ga-Rak, and ever since, his life changed extremely. 30 years have passed since then... What meaning does Jangseung have to him now? 나무에도 생명이 있으니까 나무를 마구 잘라서 장승을 만드는 것이 아니고 선조 들이 해 왔듯이 나무를 자르기 전에 제사를 지내고 장승을 만든다. 그러면 나무에 또 다른 생명이 탄생한다고 믿는다. 나무는 자기를 버릴 준비가 되어있다. 아무런 표정도.... 체온도 없는 자신을.... 결 하나 다침 없는 세세한 손길로 나무에 혼을 새기는 장승조각의 명인, 이가락. 어릴 적 우연히 본 장승 사진 한 장. 그 사진은 그의 가슴속 깊이 남아 결국 그의 인생행로를 바꾸어 놓았다. 그로부터 30여년이 지난 지금... 그에게 장승은 어떤 존재일까.
