ANEGUNDI IS OLDER than HAMPI situated on the northern bank of TUNGABHADRA RIVER PRE -HISTORIC Geologically, the Anegundi region is one of the oldest plateaus on earth. At Anegundi there is a prehistoric settlement called Onake Kindi. The rocks around the village are formed by volcanic eruptions before the evolution of life on earth. lava settled in a mosaic form This is the rare human settlement where we will find traces of the Microlithic, Megalithic and Neolithic ages of human life at the same spot. Anegundi area is about four billion years old. To date, this village is a living heritage site in its true sense. They are hundreds of prehistoric rock paintings within a radius of 5km from Anegundi Mythological Anegundi is believed to be part of the mythical city of Kishkinda, home to the mighty Indian monkey God Hanuman. Anjunadari, Hanuman's birthplace lies a few kilometres away from Anegundi Pampa Sarovar is featured in Ramayana, It is believed that Sabari a devotee of Rama met here. The pilgrims consider Pampa Sarovara a holy place. PRE VIJAYANAGARA Anegundi has a very long history beginning from the 3rd BC century when it was taken into the boundaries of Ashokan Empire. There has been no looking back since. Later, when he was outwitted and defeated by Harihara Raya and Bukka Raya (Hakka-Bukka) who renamed their kingdom as Vijayanagar. Vijaya nagara's name was advised by guru vidhyaranya which means the land of victory.Kumara Rama is a revered as a central figure in the history of Karnataka State prior to the establishment of the Vijayanagar Empire In the year 1334, Anegundi's Chief Minister Deva Raya became the first ruler of Anegundi. The very first capital of the Vijayanagar dynasty, Anegundi was also the capital of several dynastic rulers. Vijayanagara rulers decided to construct the new capital on the other side of the river which was named Hampi Later this region was ruled by the Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, Moghuls, Marathas and also Tipu Sultan during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
