We’re off to Minakami for some relaxation and a visit to Takaragawa Onsen! I was hoping we’d be able to also visit Mount Tanigawa but there just wasn’t enough time. We really should have booked more time here because the Gunma Prefecture is fantastic and there's so much to do. Just another reason to come back to Japan. LOL. We stayed two nights at Keisetsu no Yado Syoubun, which is about 20 minutes from Minakami Station. The ryokan is beautiful and each room comes with an open air bath, not to mention two additional baths for guests to use. You could easily spend your day here soaking in the baths, taking in the garden views from around the property or reading in the lounge. But we decided to visit Takaragawa Onsen. After seeing pictures of this large outdoor onsen next to the Takara River, I knew we needed to include it in our itinerary. It did not disappoint. To get there from Syoubun, we took a 20-minute bus ride and were dropped off in front of a ramen shop complete with a vending machine. Next to that was a road leading to the onsen. After about 30 minutes of walking (some up hill), we arrived 15 minutes before the doors opened at 10. (Note: Takaragawa offers a free-of-charge courtesy car from the bus stop to the onsen. Once you get off the bus, give reception a call and they'll pick you up.) The onsen cost is ¥1,500–¥2,000 per person, which includes rental of the required cover-up and towels. There are three outdoor mixed-gender baths, one indoor bath for men, one for women, and a women's-only bath along the riverside. The bath temperatures range from 105.8 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. It wasn’t crowded when we there and we had a shivering amount of fun making our way to the pools. It certainly didn’t help to have our cover-ups clinging to us as we speed-walked along the path and across the bridge. It was fall and seeing the colors made braving the cooler temperatures worth it. Be aware that there are no photos or videos allowed in the baths. When we were finished, we took the shuttle back to the bus stop and relaxed at our ryokan for the rest of the day. Then it was time to pack up and head off to our next destination: Onomichi!
