In this video, we demonstrate first-year care and maintenance practices for Jiro-Fuyu persimmon trees planted at the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. While some trees are pruned to allow for easier fruit harvesting, others—like in this case—are cultivated primarily for shade. Of the ten (10) trees planted, all but one have grown as intended. Together, we’ll address the one tree that is exhibiting a bush-like growth pattern, guiding it toward a proper tree form. We also identify and remove any rootstock suckers to ensure the tree’s energy supports the grafted scion—critical for producing high-quality fruit. Additionally, we briefly discuss the importance of whitewashing, not only to prevent sunburn damage but also as a deterrent to rodents that may chew the bark, potentially girdling the tree and shortening its lifespan.
