Last week XELA and Hannah Allchurch had the immense pleasure of watching and interviewing the seriously talented Ivorian Coast multi-instrumentalist Sidiki Dembélé and his band (including Aboubakar Konate and Momo Sangaré) for Through the Noise at The Speakeasy in Dalston. Whilst we had beautiful instruments such as the Kora feature in his eclectic set, the focus of the day was on the rope-tuned skin drum, the Djembe. Hailing from West Africa (Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Ivory Coast) and hailed by the Malinke people as a truly spiritual part of their social traditions, the Djembe is a deeply rooted part of ceremonial life. Sidiki ran us through his, and his cultures’ spiritual connection to the instrument - and the three spirits within the drum. That of the tree That of the animal (typically goat skin) That of the drummer The Djembe is used within Malinke communities for rituals, to communicate stories, but also medicinally. Our conversation with Sidiki was a really beautiful way to further understand the significant and the power of this instrument, but the performance itself was littered with deeply felt, emotional moments which could only be described as raw joy and passion. Watch out for our next interview with Balimaya Project, coming soon. allcorners
