Cannabis Therapy and Diabetes Authors: Dušan Dvořák, Irina Hubeňáková Abstract: There are about 10 000 foot and leg amputations due to diabetes every year in the Czech Republic (the so called “diabetic foot”). The health related costs itself—private and public—one year after such amputation are nearly 20 000 Euro per patient per year (according to the study of the Diabetes Centre in Prague from 2003). The costs in terms of patients’ pain and social consequences are incalculable. The authors would like to point out the therapeutic and regenerative effects of active ingredients in cannabis, which could prevent these amputations. They also want to analyze the impact of the medical cannabis law no. 50/2013 Sb., which effectively prohibited cannabis based medications, that can be used, among others, to treat and cure diabetic foot; and at the same time prevents any research into this area from happening.
