As a state widely recognized for its large tracts of pine forests, one wouldn't associate Maine with sandy dunes typical of an arid desert landscape. Yet not too far from the city of Portland, on the far side of the Casco Bay sits a fascinating natural quirk that might make you question whether you're still in the Pine Tree State. Originally hidden beneath a layer of topsoil, a field of glacial sand deposits laid dormant for thousands of years until negligent farming techniques of the 1800s rendered the soil untenable and made way for the giant bed of dunes to be uncovered. This land was later purchased about a century ago to convert this mess into a roadside tourist attraction. Just as the first nationwide highway system came into operation, vacationers got word of this "Desert of Maine" and stopped by on other journeys to marvel at a sight they probably could not see elsewhere in this part of the country. In addition to wandering around this strange complex of sand dunes, we will catch a glimpse of the actual town of Freeport and witness some more of Maine's coastal beauty. Don't "desert" this region of Maine too quickly, you might miss out on some real fun and adventure!
