Esosa Omzuyi, a Seasoned Consultant at BCG Dallas shared an insider tips to start a career in Consulting. From getting certified skill trainings to researching relevant case studies to stand out, are some of the steps he shared. Watch full video to get all insights! 25secs Esosa Omzuyi is a graduate of Accounting from the university of Lagos, Nigeria, started his ACCA in his second year and everything was just smooth nothing too much until his graduation and he was held back due to the failure of the system recording a course he did in his first year this made him rewrite the course and yes, he got delayed at home for 8 months because of this. However, this ordeal turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it was a moment of self discovery, he completed his ACCA and got a job that introduced him to accounting tools and practical knowledge needed in the field most of which are not taught in schools. He later advanced to join KPMG where he gained 3 years of work experience and left to further academics, studying finance in the Chicago business school which helped in getting him where he currently is as a consultant in BCG. 7:40 What steps did you take to turn your ordeal into a blessing? It was a very difficult, stressful and trying time but I did some things that helped me through the stage I got myself something to do: I got a job to teach in jamb/waec lesson classes. I completed my certification Sort out opportunities I advise those going through something similar to have their hands on something relevant for self development and aligned to your goal. What do you advise for those who are incapable of funding their way to sit for the certification exams? Also are there any alternatives? For me, I might not be able to categorically give some practical answers to this because to some extent I did not face the struggle of paying for my certification, yet I'd say a thing or two. I advise you take on jobs that can give decent income to fend for yourself and help fund the certification exams, like in my case the jamb/waec classes Give in your best into whatever you find doing, if you're still in school try graduating with a very good grade. Networking! Try also to get internships. Why consulting? Also what does consulting really mean? I had a background in accounting, and as a professional in the field then in KPMG, it was more of historicals, and less of forecast or looking into the future. So I wanted more out of it, I wanted something more futuristic and with the ability to predict happenings, this informed my decision in studying finance for my MBA programme. Also the beauty of consulting is that it is challenging and every job requires you to start from the scratch, lastly, consulting presents a leverage to move into other sectors within the industry effortlessly. 31:31 What key area do you advise recent graduates to get into the field of consulting? Network: networking with people in the industry Getting good grades Gather work experience Case interview is a big deal in consulting, how do you advise one to prepare? Think beyond your regular process, and gather your thoughts. Research and utilize the internet. A channel of YouTube that can help is Management Consultant Get books on case studies Improve your analytical skills Salary wise, what do you think is the pay structure for consultants compared to jobs in the financial sectors? I cannot really tell because it's a different structure in the USA and the Nigeria system. Q&A Q: I am currently serving (NYSC), I am learning data analysis from an online platform, does this give me any chance or advantage without certifications like ICAN and the likes? A: In the financial sector, certification is actually a big deal and would be considered first. Online courses are, however, great for personal growth and advancement. Q: As an undergraduate of Economics, I cannot do ICAN side by side with my academics because of my grades. Do you advise me to do a course in FMVA or CFI? A: I would advise that you do GRE/GMAT if you have the plans to further abroad, or take your certification exams bit by bit. This should be considered in line with what your plans are.
