Driving from Vordingborg to V. Egesborg in Denmark. Winter. VESTER EGESBORG is a specialized landing place that was located on the shores of Dybsø Fjord in South Zealand from the 6th to the 10th century AD. The site is among the largest and most richly excavated of its kind, and it differs structurally from the majority of known coastal sites in Denmark, Scania and Northern Germany. Vester Egesborg has served as a gathering place and training camp for ship crews before overseas voyages, and upon their return there has apparently been an occasion for a local or regional beach market. The traces of refining iron loupes and textile production are massive, and on a smaller scale glass beads, combs of bone and awns have been made, and castings in silver and bronze have been made. The book presents the results from five excavation seasons, including the large finds, which in size and composition are reminiscent of the nobleman's estates of the period. The distinctive character of Vester Egesborg is discussed and put into perspective by comparative material from Denmark and abroad. The site has been part of networks ranging from the local and regional to the international, where the Baltic Sea coasts have been the target to a greater extent than Western Europe. Finally, the 20-25 year old definitions describing the distinctive character and roles of a specialized landing place throughout the Late Iron Age are discussed.
