Miale Ya Upendo is a Swahili phrase meaning ‘Rays of Love’. In this documentary, we spoke to several family members - notably parents - of LGBTIQ+ individuals in Kenya, documenting their struggles and their journeys in having an LGBTIQ+ family member, and the worries that they have about the impact of the new ‘Kaluma Bill’ on their families and loved ones. The common thread binding all of the participants in Miale Ya Upendo is love - love for their family members, and love for their country – one which is putting them in the precarious situation of having to choose between allowing their family members to be who they are (and loving them for who they are), and breaking the law. The documentary - shot in Kenya - highlights the value of families who do not exemplify the same structure as the traditional western nuclear family model. To suggest that our families have always existed in this limited social model is to deny the impact of colonialism and oppression of our families in the past. The ‘traditional family’ is a colonial import, and this documentary is an example of how the idea and ideals of the ‘traditional family’ and of ‘traditional family values’ are being weaponized against LGBTIQ+ people and their own families. In addition to documenting the challenges that the Kaluma Bill brings with it, Miale Ya Upendo stands as an advocacy tool which we hope will be seen by other families who are also affirming, allowing them to know that there are more families like theirs, and giving them the confidence to stand in solidarity with their LGBTIQ+ family members.
