Rodney Wells, the stepfather of Tyre Nichols, spoke Friday and called on people to protest peacefully — should they choose to — when the bodycam video of the 29-year-old's encounter with police is released. Wells said that while he had pushed for charges of first-degree murder, he was satisfied with the decision of the second-degree murder charges that the five officers now face. RowVaughn Wells, the mother of Tyre Nichols called her son a "beautiful soul" and she would pray for the families of the five officers charged in his murder because of the "disgrace" they brought to their loved ones. In a Tennessee grand jury indictment returned on Thursday, the five officers, all Black, were each charged with second-degree murder, assault, kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression in the death of Nichols, a 29-year-old father. Family attorney Ben Crump went on to say that by looking at the speed at which the officers were terminated and "how swiftly" charges were brought, "we want to proclaim this is the blueprint going forward for any time, any officers — whether they be Black or white — will be held accountable." Crump also spoke about bodycam video of the 29-year-old's encounter with police and said that he had called out for his mother three times in the video. Crump referenced a kidnapping charge laid against the five officers and said Nichols was "kidnapped for a simple traffic stop," questioning the officers' actions. "His last words on Earth [was] mom," Crump said. Nichols’ death marked the latest in a spate of high-profile cases of police officers accused of using excessive force in the deaths of Black people and other minorities in recent years, sparking public outcries against systematic racism in the U.S. criminal justice system.
