“Sa Dalampasigan”, also known as the Kundiman de 1800 (not to be confused with the Kundiman de 1850 which became the basis of Jocelynang Baliwag), is a popular kundiman from the provinces of Cavite and the Tagalog privinces of Central Luzon. In 1978, Prof. Antonio Molina reintroduced the song to public knowledge and presented the original lyrics as “recalled by older persons”. The lyrics refers to the martyrdom of three Filipino priests (Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora) in 1892 and the execution of Rizal in 1896. The music has two known versions. The Cavite version is known by the title “Ang mga Martir”. The music used in this recording is the version drom Nueva Ecija. The lyricist is unknown, although some sources attibute it to Pablo Poblete. Due to its patriotic nature, it was prohibited during the early years of the American regime, along with other patriotic songs. Composer Fransisco Santiago wrote alternative comical lyrics for the song during the 1920s which became known as “Doon Po Sa Amin” or “Awit ng Pulibi”. This recording is arranged by Chino Toledo and performed by the musical group Inang Laya for their album “Alab: Alay sa Laya ng Bayan 1896-1996) --------------- SOURCES Audio: • 11 Sa Dalampasigan Images: "Flag of the Philippine Revolution: Flag of Mariano Llanera.".
