Is Under the Lake/Before the Flood the best story in Doctor Who? No. But does it find an exciting, original use for the so-called ‘Bootstrap Paradox’? Also no. But nevertheless, it interests me, because the bootstrap-looping is such a cliche of the show, by this point that it was thoroughly parodied years before the revival even began. And yet Before the Flood makes a grand, showy statement out of a commonplace trope, with its memorably showboating introduction, in which the Doctor asks who really composed Beethoven’s 5th? So, why underline the idea? How does it set up the rest of the series? What’s the relevance of Beethoven’s famous symphony? And who really composed Beethoven’s 5th?
