Acclaimed jazz vocalist Mickey Freeman performed for the Space Coast Jazz Society and their guests with an exceptional ensemble including John Simon on piano, Gene Bruno on saxophone, Joe Lopez on bass, and Claudio Berardi on drums. A dynamic, self-taught vocalist, Mickey began her professional career in Boston in 1980 as a member of the spirited 1930s/’40s swing ensemble The Boo-Bette Band, touring throughout New England. In 1982, she co-founded the jazz vocal group The Ritz, inspired by the sophisticated harmonies of The Manhattan Transfer and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. The Ritz quickly gained international recognition, performing at major jazz festivals and touring with legends including Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, Kenny Burrell, The Pointer Sisters, Phil Woods, and Spyro Gyra in destinations such as Finland, Morocco, and Singapore. The group released two acclaimed albums: Steppin’ Out (1985) and Born to Bop (1987). In 2010, a reconnection with longtime friend and Roomful of Blues founder Duke Robillard led to a special guest appearance at New York’s famed Iridium Jazz Club. The collaboration sparked the recording of Mickey’s solo album, Livin’ the Dream, produced by Robillard for Blue Duchess Records and featuring guest appearances by Robillard and saxophonist Scott Hamilton. For the next eight years, Mickey led jazz trios and quartets throughout New Jersey. Since relocating to Vero Beach, Florida in 2018, Mickey has become a vibrant presence on the local music scene, performing regularly at The Grind & Grape Café, Costa d’Este Hotel, Cobalt at Vero Beach Hotel, Vero Beach Country Club, and Vero Beach Yacht Club. She has been featured at the Indian River Theater’s Laurel Awards and performed at the Vero Beach Museum of Art’s Annual Fundraising Gala and Film Festival White Party. In 2019, Mickey joined the Arts in Medicine/Healing Arts Program at Florida Cancer Specialists in Vero Beach, bringing music and comfort to patients undergoing treatment — an experience she calls the most meaningful chapter of her musical journey. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * www.SpaceCoastJazzSociety.org / spacecoastjazzsociety / spacecoastjazzsociety / jazzcoast
