This week’s cover song - ‘Mary Hamilton’ by Joan Baez, as requested. Thank you for this wonderful request; it’s a great one. Yes, another Joan Baez song I know but everyone seems to like it when I cover her songs. This song is a traditional Scottish 16th century folk song about a lady-in-waiting who gives birth to the King’s child and is hanged for it. (How lovely!) Baez covered a lot of Scottish folk songs as she is half Scottish and this is one of my favourites. There are lots of theories about the historical context of this song but historians generally agree that it is not based on a real event. There is a theory that it is based on the story of Maria Gamentova, daughter of a lord from the Scottish clam Hamilton, who was hanged for birthing and killing a child with Peter the Great of Russia. But again, just a theory. See, with me you get music and history lessons – couldn’t be better! Don’t forget to like, comment, share and subscribe.
