Veluws is spoken in the Central Netherlands, in the Northwest of Gelderland. In 1996, the government recognized Veluws as a language, being part of the Low Saxonian dialects. The Low Saxon languages are classified as vulnerable by the UNESCO Atlas of the World's Endangered Languages. After World War II, many Veluws and other Low Saxon speakers did not feel comfortable passing on their language to their children, for fear that it would reduce job opportunities and social status. While there are not specific numbers on how many people speak Veluws, there are an estimated 1-2 million native speakers of Dutch Low Saxon in its entirety.
