Royal Artillery Hunt 25 November 2023 Grant's Firs, Salisbury Plain DEFENCE TRAINING ESTATE WARDEN TAKES HIS ORDERS FROM THE HUNT ON HIS DAY OFF Saturday 25 November and Wildlife Guardian joined Surrey Hunt Monitors and Salisbury Plain Hunt Sabs for a meet of the Royal Artillery Hunt at Grant’s Firs, Lower Everleigh on Salisbury Plain. A larger than normal meet with visiting field riders we parked up on a publicly accessible track to keep an eye on the hunt meet. What we have noticed over the last couple of seasons was the presence of one of the Salisbury Plain Wardens following the hunt on his day off. At yesterday's meet, straight away the off duty warden hid behind a car to film us through the window which is fine as we have nothing to hide (and we don’t wear face masks Ben Wallace!!). Then when the hunt unboxed, whipper-in Simon Hands instructed the warden to block our view with his Land Rover which he dutifully did. Now we wouldn’t normally show the film of hounds being unboxed, however when a person who in his day job is supposed to make sure people behave themselves and keep them and the military safe on Salisbury Plain, this was odd. As this hunt has been filmed assaulting people, causing criminal damage to vehicles and hunting foxes and deer on MOD land recently, then I suppose having one of the wardens in your back pocket is very useful. We of course have to say that what someone gets up to on their day off is up to them if they are keeping within the law, however there is a strong conflict of interests here. The hunt left the meet and hunted most of the day in areas 19 and 20. Today the hunt master Major David Puckey was trail layer, and this must have included laying a trail in the road. We filmed the hounds running after a scent all over a main public road, being encouraged from nearby by Carter. We received some petty intimidation from the whipper in Simon 'Shaky' Hands, whom we filmed assaulting a sab on the opening meet. When you're stood on a public track and he says that “I’m allowed on here and you ain’t” it is quite laughable, especially as he does it right in front of his grinning Defence Training Estate minion. An early finish to the day as the hunt were kept on their toes by sabs all day.
