Zomlot: Recognition of Palestine state is a long overdue right

Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, rejected the suggestion that granting statehood to Palestine amid the ongoing conflict amounts to a propaganda win for Hamas. Zomlot emphasised that the Palestinian right to self-determination is a long-standing, inalienable right that predates both Hamas and the State of Israel. He stated that the real question is not why the UK should recognise Palestine now, but why it has taken so long, arguing that recognition marks the beginning of correcting historical injustices dating back to the 1917 Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate, which he linked to the current crisis in Gaza and the displacement of two-thirds of the Palestinian population. Zomlot described the recognition of Palestinian statehood by the UK as a historic step towards peace and justice, adding that Britain must now take responsibility for its role in shaping the century-old conflict.
