A rare and extended version of Melissa Manchester's Grammy winning 1982 smash 'You should hear how she talks about you'. The song penned by Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford, was first memorialised by Charlie Dore, a year earlier. Melissa's version reached #5 in America and #4 in Australia. When I saw the singer perform in Sydney in late 2012 I was curious to see how she might include the track in her repertoire, as it is, for better or worse, her biggest hit, but probably (and thankfully) not her signature tune. That ironically belongs to another composer; in fact two: her regular collaborator Carole Bayer Sager and the infamous Peter Allen. The song: 'Don't cry out loud', another huge pop hit for Melissa and a Grammy nomination to boot. For me, that performance is one of the great vocal performances of that decade. It was sentiment that precluded Ms Manchester from being a Grammy winner in 1980 when label mate and veteran Dionne Warwick nabbed the prize for 'I'll never love this way again'. In 1983, Melissa beat out Olivia Newton John, Linda Ronstadt, Juice Newton and Laura Branigan (who perhaps deserved it most that year for her breakthrough hit 'Gloria'). Melissa is my all time favorite singer but even I would have preferred her to win for any number of her other great vocal performances. Perhaps it was sentiment in early 1983 that led the Academy to right the wrong and reward Melissa Manchester for a decade of great compositions and performances with the Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for 'You should hear how she talks about you. This version has been in my collection for a number of years, and is nearly 2 minutes longer than the rather insipid long version that was available commercially at the time as a 12 inch mix. Melissa was gracious and humble in her live gig about her biggest success and showed a great sense of fun and integrity when she included it that night. As it is for many artists, their greatest successes may not be their favourites nor their own compositions. The fans however must never be disappointed & Ms Manchester never does!
